Intermediate School (Grades 3 - 5)
Where Curiosity Becomes Confidence

IS Division Director
+ English & Humanities
Nan Kleiner
Nan teaches she sees children for who they are and intuitively understands deeply what each child needs to become the best version of themselves. That gift of seeing clearly shapes everything she does, both in her classroom and as Director of Intermediate School.

Nurturing Their Spark
The IS classroom is a model of purposeful variety and high‑engagement instruction. Rather than a single mode of teaching, classes are intentionally designed to offer multiple entry points for learners. Art, technology, reading, writing, and performance are blended so students practice disciplinary thinking while producing authentic artifacts of learning. It is a hive of energy!
This is where young people start to understand themselves. We make sure it's a place where that understanding feels safe, seen, and celebrated. We build around what actually matters at this age: seeing each child clearly, pushing them exactly where they need to be pushed, and giving them real experiences that make learning stick.
Focus on Skill Development

Meeting Children Where
They Are in Math
In the IS math program, we don't teach to the middle of the class by grade, or to the curriculum timeline; we teach to the child. Students advance grades by demonstrated mastery.
The foundation of our math program's success involves students moving at their own pace, not the pace the calendar dictates. The result is confidence, genuine mastery, and students who actually understand what they're learning instead of just moving through it.
