Sophia Witz

MS/US English, Journalism

Sophia’s core philosophy is centered on the importance of cultivating and uplifting student voice — and respecting what others have to say.

Sophia grew up as an avid reader and writer, going on to earn a BA in English from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, and an MFA in creative writing from Boston University. Her genuine love of literature and experience as a writer allow her to approach the subject matter with expertise and infectious enthusiasm. Outside the classroom, she brings these traits to the Novel Club and organizes the Middle and Upper Schoolers’ participation in literary and creative competitions.

Students in Sophia’s class read (and write) many different types of literature, hold spirited discussions, and give feedback on each other’s work. She firmly believes that when students are encouraged to formulate and share their opinions, stories, and interpretations, they become more personally invested in their own learning and empowered as readers and writers. Sophia strives to create a safe and open classroom environment in which this empowerment can occur and in which every student is interested in literature, even if they don’t realize it at first.
