In his early career as an English teacher his students worked on projects that gave them space to develop original interpretations of challenging works of literature; work collaboratively to share their thinking with others; and develop analytical, writing, and speaking skills that prepared them for success in college and beyond.
More recently, as an upper school division head at three other independent schools, Gareth has championed experiential learning opportunities as key components of engaging and effective teaching and learning. In addition, he believes that high school students have the capacity to be constructive contributors in the world beyond the classroom and that essential learning happens as students intentionally interact with the world around them. A goal of high school, he says, should be to both prepare students for the academic challenges of college and to provide a variety of experiences that will inform their discovery of who they are and who they want to become as individuals and as future professionals.
Upper School is an exciting, challenging, and important time in the lives of students, and Gareth is honored to be a part of the USL community and to be able to share these important years with USL students and families.
Education: Gareth earned a B.A. in English and French at Wake Forest University, a M.A. in art history at UNC Chapel Hill, and a M.S. degree in biomechanics from UNC Greensboro.
