US House District 1 Representative Joe Cunningham spoke with our students on September 9. He discussed the difference between being a challenger and an incumbent, how competitive the First District is, and the issues he is most passionate about. Cunningham also shared his personal story, described and explained the pernicious effects of gerrymandered districts, and fielded many questions from our students.
This presentation was part of our annual Fall exploration of government and elections and culminates in our exit polling project on Election Day. Students also heard from other candidates from various political parties, political scientists, and others. Talking with them enables our students to form their own opinions based on research and first-hand experience – key concepts in developing students who will think critically for themselves.
Rep. Cunningham has held the District 1 seat in the U.S. House of Representatives since 2019. Prior to serving as a House member, he was a lawyer and ocean engineer.
