LOTC: Election Preparations & Career Exploration

August 29, 2018

As preparation for November’s elections and our exit polling project on Election Day, students will hear from several speakers in the upcoming weeks – this includes the League of Women Voters (history of voting laws in America and more) and candidates from the Green, Democratic, Republican, and Libertarian Parties.  Last week they met Katie Arrington (Republican), and this afternoon, Melissa Couture, Libertarian candidate for S.C. House District #114 will talk with the students.

Students will also have a session with Russell Horres, long-time friend of USL’s, about career exploration.  Part one focuses on process – how do I determine which career is best for me? Part two is specific to the health care professions and preparatory to job shadowing at in these fields (especially connecting to our annual field trip there in December).

Part one focuses on process to avoid building anxiety about the topic of career exploration. The message here is that there is plenty of time and a process one can follow to reach goals.  Additionally, Mr. Horres will explain that every LOTC experience and guest speaker presentation is a career exploration opportunity. He is beginning with the health care cluster because of additional lead time needed to qualify interested students for job shadowing opportunities at the Medical University.
