9/12, Wednesday – LOTC – The whole school will reflect on the Day of Caring in the morning. Middle School students will spend some time practicing their Red Cross skills before exploring the Old Village and some of the newer parks within walking distance of USL. Intermediate School students will work on core skills and then also journey through the Old Village and experience some of the local parks.
9/18, Tuesday – Guest Speaker – Sally Hunt, Academic Magnet High School senior, will present her senior research project to the Middle School during Leadership & Life Skills class. Her project entails spreading awareness of deforestation in Haiti through disseminating information and creating recyclable paper beads.
9/19, Wednesday – LOTC – 1) a small USL community group will complete a rescheduled Day of Caring project at South Santee Senior and Community Centerin McClellanville. 2) all other students will walk down Coleman Blvd. for a painting project at Art Buzz Kids Mount Pleasant. In the afternoon, we will enjoy lunch at Mount Pleasant’s new Shem Creek Park.
9/26, Wednesday – Beginning at 9:00, we will take our school and individual photos with Pat Ring from Ring Photography at Alhambra Hall in the Old Village. Guest Speaker – At 1 PM, in preparation for November’s elections, Julie Hussey, from the League of Women Voters, will discuss America’s voting history, SC’s current ballot issues, and other relevant voting topics.
9/27, Thursday – Mrs. Coll will lead a meeting for parents interested in learning more about the process of researching, visiting and deciding on the right high school for your child. This session will include tips for all 8th grade parents concerning the process and also a presentation on the important dates throughout the Fall and Winter at our local area high schools.
10/1, Monday – University School students, faculty, parents and mentors will enjoy a community potluck meal and each other’s company. Mr. Kreutner will also give a picture presentation about the opening weeks of school and the learning and activities the students and the community have been involved in.
10/3, Wednesday – (A) LOTC – Middle School students will walk to Coastal Expeditions (514 Mill Street) for a kayaking activity on Shem Creek to Crab Bank Island. 10/4, Thursday – Guest Speaker – At 11 AM, in preparation for November’s elections, Bill Rogers, Executive Director of the South Carolina Press Association, will discuss the role of the press in South Carolina (and the Freedom of Information Act and our low ranking for government transparency, etc.) and the importance of the press in investigating/reporting/publicizing the actions of government, etc. Jen Barclay Madden, Assistant Director, will also address newer forms of media and the impact of the internet on traditional newspapers (i.e. hyperlocal news sites like Patch).
10/8, Monday – Guest Speaker – At 7:45 AM, U.S. State Department Consular Affairs Official Kevin Kreutner will speak at University School. Kreutner and his wife, Lourdes Lamela, are both Foreign Service officers and have been stationed at U.S. embassies in Mexico, Iraq, Spain, Saudi Arabia, and most recently in Syria until America’s embassy was closed. A fluent Arabic speaker, Kreutner will speak about the Arab Spring, events in Syria, the role of the State Department, and his personal story and perspective as an American diplomat in the Middle East.
10/10, Wednesday – LOTC – We will visit North America’s only tea plantation and the oldest tree east of the Mississippi River. The Charleston Tea Plantation on Wadmalaw Island is a working farm that uses tea plants dating back to the 18th century, and the tea is processed at an on-site factory. A horticulturalist will explain how tea plants are grown and nurtured. We will also learn about the processing of the tea and explore the 180 acre plantation by trolley. On the way to the Charleston Tea Plantation,we will stop and visit Angel Oak. This oak tree is estimated to be over 1000 years old. *** Click here for the slideshow.
10/17, Wednesday – (AM) 4th-7th grades – community building exercises and then community service by running Hibben Church’s Pumpkin Patch and cleaning up in and around campus; 8th grade – take the PSAT in the morning and then community service at Hibben. (PM) On-campus art projects. * Guest Speaker – At 1:30 PM, in preparation for November’s elections, Eaddy Willard, of the Southeastern Institute for Women in Politics, will speak at University School about the past and present status of female representation in elected offices in South Carolina and the efforts of the SIWP to address this. South Carolina currently has no females in our State Senate, and the state is ranked 50th for women in elected office (furthermore, 4 women ever elected to statewide office, 1 women in Congress from 1987-1993, and women make up only 17.5% of trustees at South Carolina public colleges and universities). Willard is a former Republican Congressional staffer and has served in many functions in the party. She is the immediate past Secretary of the SCGOPhaving served in that position for a decade. She is the former president of the Capital City Republican Women.
10/19, Friday – Guest Speaker – In preparation for November’s elections, Bakari Sellers, South Carolina State House District #90 (Bamberg, Barnwell, and Orangeburg Counties) representative since 2007 will speak at University School. Sellers, a member of the S.C. Democratic Party, was elected in 2006 at the age of 22, and he is the son of civil rights activist (Orangeburg Massacre at S.C. State in 1968) and current president of Voorhees College, Cleveland Sellers. In 2010, Time Magazine named Sellers one of its top 40 civic leaders under the age of 40 in America. He will speak about the upcoming election, his party, its platform, and other issues relevant to politics in South Carolina and America.
10/20, Saturday – The USL community will assist Hibben UMC with their annual Fall Festival from 10 AM – 2 PM. To help support Hibben’s meal outreach program, each USL family is asked to bring at least one canned good in advance of the Fall Festival.
10/21, Sunday – The USL community will have a game booth, assist with the CARTA info booth, and help with clean-up at the Mount Pleasant Children’s Festival at Park West Recreational Complex (12 PM-5 PM).
10/24, Wednesday – LOTC – At University School, we believe in learning about religious faiths first hand. In this light, we will visit The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints location in West Ashley for a presentation, tour and exploration of the Family Research Center. In preparation for November’s elections, Keith Blandford , Libertarian Party candidate for US House District #1, will speak at University School about the Libertarian Party, its platform, and his race as a third party candidate in South Carolina.

11/5, Monday – HOSTED PERFORMANCE – University School will host USC School of Music professors Rebecca Hunter and Lynn Kompass for a classical music performance at 10 AM in the gym. They will discuss and then play parts of the following works: Ayala Asherov’s 4 movement work “Sunsets”, Beethoven’s Violin and Piano Sonata Op. 12 No. 1 I. Allegro con brio, and Brahms Violin Sonata Op. 78 G Major II. Adagio and III. Allegro molto moderato. It is appropriate for all ages and lasts about 60 minutes. Guests will include our friends from Christ our King-Stella Maris School, Sweetgrass Assisted Living Village, Montessori of Mount Pleasantl, Hibben UMC Preschool, Charleston-area homeschool families, and other groups from the community.
11/6, Tuesday – ELECTION DAY LOTC – Our main effort will be exit polling at various precincts around the county. Each student will visit at least two precincts in different areas of the the Lowcountry to get a sense of what is motivating voters at the polls. 11/7, Wednesday – LOTC – review the results of Tuesday’s election. We will also examine national and international perspectives on the outcomes. The MS will also hear a presentation from a guest speaker and the guide for next week’s LOTC. Russell Horres will provide an overview of the rice culture in the Lowcountry and specific details related to Hampton Plantation.
11/10, Saturday – Optional Family LOTC – YALLFEST – Charleston’s Young Adult Book Festival (420 King Street from 10 AM – 6 PM). YALLFEST is a Young Adult Literature Festival founded and based in Charleston, and the second year of the event was held last Friday and Saturday. USL is friends with Jonathan Sanchez, the owner of Blue Bicycle Books and the driving force behind YALLFEST. We were able to participate in the Middle School Writers’ Symposium associated with it last year and this year. This invitation-only event takes place on Friday, and the students get to meet and hear from many of the leading authors in attendance. Most of the Middle School was able to attend this, and they took some pictures of the activities. A large group of students also attended YALLFEST on their own on Saturday, and I am very happy about this. Pleasure reading is to be cherished, and it is terrific that University School’s culture celebrates outside reading. 11/14, Wednesday – LOTC – We explored the rice culture of the Carolina Lowcountry. The itinerary included traveling to the Rice Museum in Georgetown and then exploring Hampton Plantation in McClellanville. Hampton was home to Archibald Rutledge, S.C. Poet Laureate, and the site also allows visitors to better understand the lives of enslaved people and the system of slavery. This is in line with our tradition of visiting a different plantation each year to compare and contrast them (Magnolia Plantation in ’09-’10, Middleton Place in ’10-’11, Drayton Hall in ’11-’12, etc.).
11/19, Monday – Middle School students, their families, and the faculty will enjoy the annual Middle School luncheon, and it will feature Mediterranean dishes. Themes from earlier years include items from Charleston Receipts and a traditional Southern picnic. 11/28, Wednesday – LOTC – AM, students will take part in relationship building activities, Wellness workshops, and an extended L&L class. PM, the MS will visit our friends at Sweetgrass Assisted Living Village to make wreaths for all of the residents. 12/12, Wednesday – LOTC- Medical University of South Carolina – It is a December tradition to visit MUSC. Students were greeted with an exercise involving how does one assess a potential cancer patient with Dr. Gerard Silvestri. Students then rotated through several experiences: making and delivering holiday cards to cancer patients, touring the Cancer Genomics lab with Dr. Bob Wilson, understanding drug development through a discovery tour with Dr. Patrick Woster, and learning more about the use of computerized mannequins at the Simulation Center with Dr. Nicholas Pastis. *** Click here for the slideshow.
12/15, Saturday – Optional Family LOTC – On Saturday, December 15, the Society for Creative Anachronism is holding the Feast of Saint Andrew at the Colleton Saddle Club in Walterboro (this is the link to the event description). It will feature Middle Ages-style fighting events and period-appropriate arts and science activities. For those who are interested, there is also a feast of food items of the time. Several USL families went a similar SCA event a few years ago. We had a nice time in New Ellention, and the SCA participants were gracious hosts and did a terrific job of explaining the activities and events of the day. 12/20, Thursday – LOTC – We will have our annual Winter Faiths/Holidays Interdisciplinary Day. We will learn about holidays and how they are celebrated by various faith and ethnic groups. We will visit Holy Ascension Orthodox Churchin Mt. Pleasant, and Father John Parker will provide some information about the Orthodox Church and Christmas (many Orthodox Christians celebrate Christmas on January 7: this is December 25 according to the Julian calendar that the Orthodox Church follows). We will visit “Mother” Emanuel AME Church in Charleston. Students will learn about this historically African-American denomination and how they celebrate Christmas. One interesting fact about Emanuel AME is their pastor is also a S.C. State Senator – Rev. Clementa Pinckney. We will then explore Synagogue Emanu-El in West Ashley for a presentation and tour by Rabbi Adam Rosenbaum. He will teach us more about the Jewish holiday of Chanukah, celebrated from December 8-16 this year. 12/20, Thursday – On Thursday, December 20, University School students, faculty, parents and mentors will enjoy a pizza dinner and each other’s company from 6:00-7:30 PM in the gym. Mr. Kreutner will also give a picture presentation about the first semester and the learning and activities the students and the community have been involved in. We also ask that each student bring a few durable food items that we will donate to the Lowcountry Food Bank and Holy Trinity AME Church. We are friends with the Lowcountry Food Bank and Pastor Brown at Holy Trinity AME Church on Mathis Ferry in Mount Pleasant (we have visited both places and gave food donations to them), and it would be great if we could provide some durable food items to them for the holidays. This is an annual tradition to support the Food Bank and the food outreach efforts of HT AME.

1/9, Wednesday – LOTC – We will travel to the Gibbes Art Museum for two tours and lunch. In the morning, we will learn about Charleston’s story as told through art from the Revolutionary War through the Civil War. We will then have lunch in the courtyard. 1/16, Wednesday – LOTC – AM – Dr. Peter Kalivas, Chair of the Neurosciences Department at MUSC, will give separate presentations to the Intermediate and Middle Schools. His research interests are addiction and the brain and how growing up in an impoverished environment can result in learning and memory deficits. 1/23, Wednesday – LOTC – AM – IS takes a tour of College of Charleston and The Citadel (a focus on architecture, public colleges, and comparing and contrasting). MS will be assisting the Charleston Park Conservancy as they prepare a public garden in the South Windermere Shopping Center. PM – All School exploration of significant points of interest in Charleston that USL has not been able to fold into earlier experiences. There will be an emphasis on parks and public spaces, and the issues of tax base and creating value / desirability through public spaces.
1/30, Wednesday – LOTC – Students traveled to Robertson’s Farm on Wadmalaw Island to glean kale through the Fields to Families program. F to F connects farmers who wish to donate crops to those in need with volunteers who do the harvesting. We gathered over 1000 pounds of kale, and we enjoyed sampling it and kohlrabi from the farm. On our way back to USL, we stopped at the Lowcountry Food Bank (our LOTC site for next week) to donate it. 2/6, Wednesday – LOTC – AM – we will visit Rob Fowler at WCBD in Mt. Pleasant. He will give us a tour of the weather forecasting components of the station and share a meteorology & weather lesson with us. PM – we will travel to the Lowcountry Food Bank and learn about its role as a hub for food collection and disbursement to non-profits in our area. 2/15, Friday – (1) our LOTC activities for this week will include a trip to Marion Square in downtown Charleston for the first day of the Southeastern Wildlife Exposition. Flight demonstrations by the Center for Birds of Prey, specialty breeds of dogs, various forms of wildlife art, and the presence of government and non-profit experts on the environment and wildlife are the highlights of this experience. *** Click here for the slideshow.

2/20, Wednesday – LOTC – We went to the Naval Weapons Station to learn about the Army’s Prepositioned Stock program. It provided a lesson in logistics and advance planning as we learned that America has fixed sites all across the globe with material for the Army, and this Program manages the four ships in the Indian & Pacific Oceans that are floating vehicle warehouses. 2/27, Wednesday – LOTC – In the morning, students will also engage in some practice testing to get acclimated to the Stanford Achievement test. In the afternoon, we will take part in a Peruvian experience led by IS Spanish teacher Tania Schettini. We will travel to Pollo Tropical for a demonstration of preparing ceviche and a Peruvian-style lunch.

3/12, Tuesday – All of the students (both MS and IS) competed in a creative writing competition they completed for Mrs. Scarafile’s Writing class called “The Great Potato Disguise.” Students and parents enjoyed all of the potatoes and the accompanying stories, and votes were tallied in the categories of Best Writing, Best Disguise, Most Creative/Funniest, and Best Overall for both the Intermediate and Middle Schools. *** Click here for the slideshow.

3/20, Wednesday – Students will take sections of the Stanford Achievement test and have Talent Show practice. Students will prepare sandwiches and desserts for our Fellowship Lunch (12:30) with members of Hibben UMC. This involves USL students eating in small groups with small groups of Hibben UMC: we share a meal that both groups provide (Hibben soup and table settings, USL dessert and sandwiches). 3/27, Wednesday – Students will finish the Stanford tests and complete any make-ups if needed. The MS will have a special guest speaker, Alan Moskin — grandfather of 8th grader Rory Corcoran. He was a World War II American soldier who helped liberate the Gunskirchen Lager concentration camp in May 1945. We will then travel to Hollywood, SC to meet with Frank Marvin, retired owner of Marvin’s Meats. 4/10, Wednesday – LOTC – AM – IS Students will continue their practice and lessons in cursive handwriting. At 11:00 they will walk to the new Shem Creek Park for lunch, and then they’ll have a Georgia O’Keefe-inspired mixed media art class with the staff of Art Buzz Kids (Wine and Design) from 12:00-1:30. The MS will remain at USL to prepare for the upcoming Middle School trip to the mountains of North Carolina.
4/12, Friday – SPECIAL IS LOTC – We are friends with Sweetgrass Village Assisted Living Center on Mathis Ferry Road in Mount Pleasant. They attend all of our cultural events throughout the year, and we help them with their annual Easter Egg Hunt for their residents. Sweetgrass is holding this activity in the afternoon in conjunction with students from MUSC, and it is always a fun and nice event. * This year’s activity is being held after Easter because of scheduling conflicts. *** Click here for the slideshow.
4/14, Sunday – Friday, 4/19 – Middle School trip – the MS is headed to western North Carolina and eastern Tennessee from approximately Sunday, April 14 (AM) to Friday, April 19 (PM). We have created our own itinerary for this trip, and we will be using our regular bus charter service (Mott’s) for transportation. We have an enlightening and fun itinerary planned, and themed days include experiences and activities involving the Cherokee tribe, Biltmore House and Asheville, mountains/caverns, farming, mountain culture — including bluegrass — and includes a college tour of Western Carolina University (their Cherokee culture department is helping orchestrate some of our experiences).
4/17, Wednesday – LOTC – IS Students will travel to Kiawah Island for two neat educational programs: beach ecology and reptiles of the Lowcountry. Between the two activities, students will eat lunch at Mingo Point or another outdoor venue at Kiawah. *** Click here for the slideshow.
4/24, Wednesday – LOTC – We will head to Walterboro to Keegan-Filion Farm. Keegan-Filion Farm specializes in free-range chickens, cows, turkeys, and pigs. They do this without using hormones or antibiotics, and the cows are grass-fed (not corn or grain-fed). The farm is held in high regard for its practices and its products, and they supply many of the finest Lowcountry restaurants.
5/1, Wednesday – LOTC – University School will celebrate the end of the year by the beach on Isle of Palms: this is an annual tradition.

5/7, Tuesday – Hosted Performance – University School will host Billy Jonas, a perfomer known for his original voice and percussion-based songs. While heavily involving the audience, Jonas plays conventional instruments (guitar, bass, marimba) and homemade creations (using buckets and barrels, keys and cans, bells and body percussion). 5/8, Wednesday – LOTC – Annual Personal Health Symposium – Dr. Lynn Manfred, Clinical Director of the Division of Adolescent Medicine at MUSC, will come to University School with some of her residents, to educate our students on personal health and hygiene.
5/15, Wednesday – LOTC – USL students will explore several areas of responsibility overseen by the Charleston County Department of Environmental Management. We will visit the Bees Ferry Landfill — including its Composting Site, and our exploration will also include the County’s Recycling Center on Romney Street in downtown Charleston. We will also visit GrowFood Carolina to learn more about their efforts to support local farmers by more efficiently connecting them with potential customers.
5/16, Thursday – Eighth Grade Graduation and Lunch – eighth graders will cook and serve lunch for their families, USL faculty, and the Middle School in appreciation for their support and their experience at University School. Seventh graders will serve as apprentices, and the event will include speeches delivered by the eighth graders in which they thank their families, teachers, and friends and a slideshow.
5/21, Tuesday – Mr. Kreutner will take the 8th graders to eat lunch at the College of Charleston.
5/22, Wednesday – LOTC – Students will will visit the Grigorieff/Maybank farm on James Island near Morris Island. Students will actively learn about farming from Meg Moore of Dirthugger Farm. Moore’s land is a part of the Maybank family farm on James Island. Students will also go in groups to Morris Island to explore the waterways and learn first-hand about marsh and barrier island ecology with a naturalist. ** Postponed to next year because of thunderstorms. Alternate LOTC to Hot Wheels Skate Rink on James Island.
5/24, Friday – Students & Mentors Activity – USL students and mentors will enjoy a movie, games, and food in the gym from 6:30-8:30 PM.
