August 22 (Wed.)... USL faculty and interested parents will take Darkness to Light sexual abuse awareness training at 9:30 AM.
August 27 (Mon. )... Open House for Parents at 6 PM in the gym.
September 7 (Fri.)... University School students, faculty, and parents will take part in National Day of Caring service projects through the Trident United Way in Charleston, Berkeley and Dorchester counties.
September 7 (Fri.)...Students & Mentors Activity - USL students and mentors will enjoy a movie, games, and food in the gym from 6:30-8:30 PM.
September 27 (Th.) ....At 6 PM, Mrs. Coll will lead a meeting for parents interested in learning more about the process of researching, visiting and deciding on the right high school for your child. This session will include tips for all 8th grade parents concerning the process and also a presentation on the important dates throughout the Fall and Winter at our local area high schools.
October 1 (Mon.)...University School students, faculty, parents and mentors will enjoy a community potluck meal and each other’s company. Mr. Kreutner will also give a picture presentation about the opening weeks of school and the learning and activities the students and the community have been involved in.
October 3 (Wed.) ... At 3 PM, we will help the Hibben UMC community unload and arrange the pumpkins on the lawn facing Coleman Blvd. Afterwards enjoy a free pizza dinner in the gym!
October 20 (Sat.)... The USL community will assist Hibben UMC with their annual Fall Festival from 10 AM - 2 PM.
October 21 (Sun.)... The USL community will have a game booth, assist with the CARTA info booth, and help with clean-up at the Mount Pleasant Children's Festival at Park West Recreational Complex (12 PM-5 PM)
October 25 (Thurs.)...Students & Mentors Activity - USL students and mentors will enjoy a movie, games, and food in the gym from 6:30-8:30 PM. * Special night because Friday, October 26 is a CCSD and USL student holiday.
November 4 (Sun.)....University School will hold its Annual Auction and Oyster Roast at Goldbug Island (1560 Ben Sawyer Boulevard, Mount Pleasant), and all members and supporters of the USL community are invited to join us for this event. November 5 (Mon.).....HOSTED PERFORMANCE - University School will host USC School of Music professors Rebecca Hunter and Lynn Kompass for a classical music performance at 10 AM in the gym. They will discuss and then play parts of the following works: Ayala Asherov's 4 movement work "Sunsets", Beethoven's Violin and Piano Sonata Op. 12 No. 1 I. Allegro con brio, and Brahms Violin Sonata Op. 78 G Major II. Adagio and III. Allegro molto moderato. It is appropriate for all ages and lasts about 60 minutes. Guests will include our friends from Sweetgrass Assisted Living Village, Moultrie Middle School, Hibben UMC Preschool, Charleston-area homeschool families, and other groups from the community.
November 13 (Tues.).....USL community gathering for the James Island County Park's Holiday Festival of Lights
November 19 (Mon.).....MS students will bring food dishes for a USL community lunch celebrating another culture
November 30 (Fri.)...Students & Mentors Activity - USL students and mentors will enjoy a movie, games, and food in the gym from 6:30-8:30 PM.
December 1 (Sat.).....USL Board Retreat
December 20 (Th.)...On Thursday, December 20, University School students, faculty, parents and mentors will enjoy a pizza dinner and each other’s company from 6:00-7:30 PM in the gym. Mr. Kreutner will also give a picture presentation about the first semester and the learning and activities the students and the community have been involved in. his is the special Winter Break edition. We also ask that each student bring a few durable food items that we will donate to the Lowcountry Food Bank and Holy Trinity AME Church. We are friends with the Lowcountry Food Bank and Pastor Brown at Holy Trinity AME Church on Mathis Ferry in Mount Pleasant (we have visited both places and gave food donations to them), and it would be great if we could provide some durable food items to them for the holidays. This is an annual tradition to support the Food Bank and the food outreach efforts of HT AME. * This evening may be an end of semester potluck dinner and slideshow presentation.
January (Sat.) ...Optional Family LOTC to the Charleston Chinese Association's Chinese New Year Celebration.
January (Fri.)...Students & Mentors Activity - USL students and mentors will enjoy a movie, games, and food in the gym from 6:30-8:30 PM.
February 5 (Tues.)....HOSTED PERFORMANCE - University School will host Wona Womalan, a West African drum and dance ensemble. It is appropriate for all ages and lasts about 60 minutes. Guests will include our friends from Christ our King-Stella Maris School, Sweetgrass Assisted Living Village, Montessori of Mount Pleasantl, Hibben UMC Preschool, Charleston-area homeschool families, and other groups from the community.
February 15 (Fri.)....MS Valentine Dance.
February (Sat.)...Fourth Charleston Chinese Speech Contest and Performance in connection with The Citadel and the College of Charleston
February (Fri.)...Students & Mentors Activity - USL students and mentors will enjoy a movie, games, and food in the gym from 6:30-8:30 PM.
March (Fri.) ...Community dinner and All-School Talent Show (6:00 PM in the gym)
April (Fri.)...Students & Mentors Activity - USL students and mentors will enjoy a movie, games, and food in the gym from 6:30-8:30 PM.
May 7 (Tues.).... Hosted Performance - University School will host Billy Jonas, a perfomer known for his original voice and percussion-based songs. While heavily involving the audience, Jonas plays conventional instruments (guitar, bass, marimba) and homemade creations (using buckets and barrels, keys and cans, bells and body percussion). This performance is appropriate for all ages and lasts about 60 minutes. Guests will include our friends from Christ our King-Stella Maris School, Sweetgrass Assisted Living Village, Montessori of Mount Pleasantl, Hibben UMC Preschool, Charleston-area homeschool families, and other groups from the community.
Date TBD...USL Community End of Year Celebration (6-8 PM)
Mid-to-late May ...Eighth Grade Graduation Lunch - eighth graders will cook and serve lunch for their families, USL faculty, and the Middle School in appreciation for their support and their experience at University School. Seventh graders will serve as apprentices, and the event will conclude with speeches delivered by the eighth graders in which they thank their families, teachers, and friends
End of May (Fri.)...Students & Mentors Activity - USL students and mentors will enjoy a movie, games, and food in the gym from 6:30-8:30 PM.
2012 Summer Activities
USL hosts several activities in the summer to allow incoming students and interested families to spend time with members of the USL community (fellow students, faculty, teen and young adult mentors). Please be sure to RSVP by email at least two days before the activity you plan to attend.
